Tumbling Woman
9/11 memorial statue covered after complaints The strong reaction against the piece shows that it has struck a nerve - shows that the artist has carried out the highest calling of creative art; to make people think about what has happened, what life entails. It was, perhaps, too soon for so graphic a rendition of the event - personally, I think that the problem stems mostly from those who just don't want to know that human beings, faced with a choice between incineration and jumping, chose to jump - in other words, the harshest critics of the sculpture wish to hide their heads in the sand and pretend the unimaginable horror was something other than it was...they want it to just be a matter of politics, war and collapsing buildings, they don't want it to be about an all too human woman, jumping to her death because she didn't want to burn.
